    Introduction

If you are looking for quick recipes suitable for any occasion, but want to prepare something different from the usual savoury pies, you really need these savoury puff pastries with ham and Grana Padano cheese filling. The incredible thing about this recipe is the speed with which you can make it: in just twenty-five minutes of cooking time, you can serve a tasty appetiser that will win over all your guests. Whether for lunch, dinner, a buffet meal, a festive appetiser or an aperitif at home, these savoury puff pastries are the perfect candidates to become the absolute stars of the table. They are also delicious when eaten the next day, and great as a tasty packed lunch for the office.

For the filling of our puff pastries we opted for simplicity, combining Grana Padano cheese with cooked ham and enclosing it all inside a roll of puff pastry decorated with a sprinkling of sesame seeds. If you can’t wait to make them with us, let’s go straight to the kitchen and see what ingredients we need.

    Ingredients

    • 1 roll of puff pastry
    • 80 g Grana Padano
    • 100 g ham
    • 1 egg
    • 2 tablespoons of milk
    • Sesame seeds, as required

    Preparation

    STEP 1

First, unroll the puff pastry roll and divide it into five or more parts, all of equal length. The bigger the strips, the bigger the puff pastries will be when baked. If you have stored it in the fridge, we recommend you take it out at least five minutes before you start preparing the recipe.

    STEP 2

You then need to fill each section with the ingredients. Take the ham and place it lengthwise in the centre of each puff pastry strip. Cover with plenty of Grana Padano cheese and then close the dough over on itself, creating small sausages. Now, after closing them tightly, roll them up to create swirls. If you prefer a simpler shape or want to make tasty finger food, you can also cut each sausage into several pieces with the help of a kitchen knife.

    STEP 3

At this point, beat the egg in a bowl, adding a little milk. With a pastry brush, brush the surface of the pastries with beaten egg, then cover them with a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds.

    STEP 4

It is time to put them in the oven: place the pastries on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake them in a preheated oven at 190° for about 25 minutes, until they are golden and crispy on the surface. Serve hot after standing for a while, or even cold later on.

    Variants

As we have just seen, this recipe is really very easy to make, but the funny thing is that it is also perfect when served in endless different versions: cold meats, cheeses, olives, spices, these puff pastry turnovers are also a great opportunity to make an fridge-emptying recipe with whatever you may have left over in the fridge. Instead of cooked ham, you can use any other cold meat, such as prosciutto , salami, speck and so on. If you want a creamier result, add some other cheese along with the Grana Padano, such as stracchino or some mild gorgonzola. All you have to do is add a small line of cheese on top of the ham; the oven will do the rest, melting the cheese and making your pastries tasty and springy. Or another idea is making them with some mozzarella, anchovies, a little tomato puree, some chopped fresh basil leaves and to finish it all off, a sprinkling of grated cheese.
