    • 600 g potatoes
    • 150 g ham, sliced
    • 30 g Grana Padano PDO, grated
    • 20 g breadcrumbs
    • 2 eggs
    • Salt
    • Pepper
    • Extra virgin olive oil

    • For the béchamel sauce
    • 1 l milk
    • 150 g Grana Padano PDO, grated
    • 100 g butter
    • 100 g 00 grade flour
    • Nutmeg to taste
    • Salt

    Preparation: how to make a Potato Gateau

    Making a potato gateau is a great and simple way of using leftovers and it will please the whole family. Let’s see how it’s done.

    STEP 1

    How do you make potato gateau? To start, make the béchamel sauce: in a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, add the flour and mix well until you obtain a smooth and lump-free mixture.

    STEP 2

    Pour in the milk at room temperature while continuing to stir, add a pinch of salt and some nutmeg and cook over low heat for 5-6 minutes until the sauce becomes creamy. Add the grated Grana Padano PDO and keep stirring.

    STEP 3

    Boil the potatoes with the skin in plenty of salted water for approximately 30 minutes. Peel the potatoes while they are still warm. You can use a fork to help.

    STEP 4

    Add the eggs, salt and pepper, and mix until the ingredients are evenly combined​.

    STEP 5

    Grease a baking dish with oil and coat it evenly with breadcrumbs, then add half of the potato mixture. Add the slices of ham and the Grana Padano PDO béchamel sauce.

    STEP 6

    It’s time to complete the Potato Gateau: add the remaining potato mixture, evenly level the surface and cover with breadcrumbs. Dust with grated Grana Padano PDO and cook in the oven at 180° C for 30 minutes. Once out of the oven, your potato bake will have a soft centre and a crispy top.
